High-Rise Safety

High-rise buildings are designed to resist fire and stop the spread of smoke. Living in a high-rise building does not mean you are at greater risk from a fire, but it does mean you need to consider:

  • Your safety,
  • The impact a fire in your flat could have on others,
  • The impact a fire elsewhere in the building could have on you.

If you are concerned about fire safety within your flat or would like advice, you can request a Safe and Well visit.

High Rise

High-Rise Living - Your Safety:

  • Install at least one smoke detector in your flat.
  • Test detectors once a week, and regularly maintain them.
  • Close all internal doors before going to bed.
  • Keep door and window keys where everyone can find them.
  • Ensure smoking materials are fully extinguished before placing them in household waste.
  • Don’t cook if you feel tired or are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Keep exit routes clear and free from obstruction.
  • Make an escape plan and make sure you and your family know what to do if there is a fire in your flat.

High-Rise Living – Building Safety:

  • Keep all exits and passageways clear of any obstructions.
  • Report any damage to fire doors to the Responsible Person for the building.
  • Don’t force bulky items, or discard hot items down bin chutes. This may compromise the safety of the chute.
  • Dispose of rubbish in the bins provided and don’t leave rubbish in communal areas or next to bin chutes.
  • Don’t prop open fire doors. Fire doors should always be kept closed to maintain their effectiveness.
  • Don’t store bulky items such as prams, bikes, or mobility scooters in corridors.
  • Make sure you are aware of emergency procedures for your building which will be provided by the Responsible Person.
