Firefighters at Slaithwaite Station have prepared more than 130 Christmas hampers to deliver to local families this week.

The station is working with schools in and around the Colne Valley area, as well as the Kirklees and Huddersfield Salvation Army and Food Share Scheme and other partners.

Slaithwaite On Call Fire Fighter, Richard Izzard, who set up Slaithwaite Mutual Aid in May 2020 at the start of the pandemic, said: "Thank you to everyone in the community who gave their time, money or donations to help those who are struggling, as well as all of the partners and schools who have worked with us on this since we set up the scheme."

"The response has been amazing since we launched our appeal. Toy and food donations have been coming in in droves, thanks to the generosity of local people and businesses. We have a green bin at the front of the fire station which is there 24/7, and has been overflowing every day."

The gifting and food parcel scheme was first created in Christmas 2020 to bring festive cheer to people in need. Slaithwaite Mutual Aid provides a range of support in addition to a food bank, including a friendship scheme.
