Success at Women in Fire Service Awards 2024

We’re delighted to have both a winner and runner up announced in the Women in the Fire Service UK Awards 2024.

Georgina Ralph was recognised as the Winner in the Bright Light Award, and Danielle Whitham was runner up in the Rising Star Award.

Bright Light Award Winner – Georgina Ralph

Recognised for her proactive approach, Georgina organised an alternative development weekend in response to the high demand for tickets to the 2023 WFS Training and Development Event. She worked tirelessly to secure a location, develop an interactive and dynamic agenda, and ensure that staff from all over the service had access to attend the event. This was all in addition to being a mum and working full time as a crew manager.

Georgina said:

 “I’m incredibly honoured to be selected to win this award. Reading through the thoughtful nominations from my colleagues was overwhelming, to say the least. I’m grateful for my passion and hard work to be recognised, and eager to see what opportunities will come next!”

Firefighter Rising Star Award Runner Up – Danielle Whitham

Graduating as the top trainee six years ago, Danielle has established herself within the service, now assuming a role as a temporary Crew Manager on the firefighter training team. Her dedication to empowering women is evident, and Danielle went on to set up a West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Women’s football team.

Women in the Fire Service UK (WFS) was set up in the 1990s as a self-help and not for profit organisation. Our members of all genders, come from all roles across the Fire and Rescue Service – from firefighters and control staff, administrative and support staff and senior officers, to members of airport, defence and works fire services.

Since its formation, the membership have sought to influence the equality agenda, taking active roles in research, for example into women’s fit fire kit, supporting positive action initiatives, working with the government in nationwide campaigns for recruitment and playing a part in national groups with other stakeholders. We are recognised nationally, currently holding a seat on the Fire Sector Federation, amongst other inputs to the local and national agenda.
