Bradford district spans 141 square miles with a population of nearly 545,000. It includes Airedale, Wharfedale, Worth Valley, Bradford City, and towns like Bingley, Ilkley, Keighley, and Shipley. The district is diverse in ethnicity, culture, and geography, and faces economic challenges with a mix of affluent and deprived areas.
We manage various risk profiles through Prevention, Protection, and Response strategies, collaborating with partners like Bradford District Council, West Yorkshire Police, housing associations, and the voluntary sector. Bradford boasts over 4,000 listed buildings, including Saltaire Village, and has a dynamic workforce with high self-employment and new business start-ups. Over a quarter of the population is under 18.
Our strategic priorities outlined in this plan are aligned to the service Community Risk Management Plan (CRMP).
"The Bradford district annual plan 2024–2025 sets out our priorities and areas of focus over the next 12 months. Bradford’s priorities are aligned with the wider service priorities as determined in the Community Risk Management Plan 2022-2025. You will see from the plan that we remain committed to driving down risk, reducing vulnerability and to help those most in need.
We are committed to working with partner agencies across the city and share a vision with Bradford Community Safety Partnership and Safer Bradford. Bradford is the youngest city in the UK with more than 26% of its population under the age of 18 years. Our shared vision includes giving people the best start in life, reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, and making people feel safe in their neighbourhoods. We will contribute to Bradford’s Serious Violence Duty and support the local authority and West Yorkshire Police in driving down violence in the city.
Bradford has won the UK City of Culture 2025. It is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary cultural heritage of the young and ethnically diverse population. WYFRS will come together with partner agencies to promote this great achievement and seek opportunities to promote our key safety messages.
This year's plan also highlights our continued emphasis on ‘Safe and Well’ and our commitment, with partner agencies, to help those most at risk from fire. Our focus remains on identifying vulnerability, and we will continue to seek appropriate partnerships to help achieve this.
I want to further improve community education and engagement in topics such as water safety, road safety, and wildfires. Using OneView data will ensure a targeted approach in the areas most at risk from these types of incidents. We have already seen some fantastic initiatives in Bradford, working with Schools and colleges and ensuring young people are receiving education, to keep themselves and their families safe.
I plan to increase the Youth Intervention programmes across many areas of Bradford, providing engaging programmes for those young people most likely to make poor decisions relating to anti-social behaviour and road safety.
Firefighters in Bradford are professional, highly trained, and remain focused on providing a first- class service to the communities we serve. Ensuring firefighters remain highly skilled is a top priority and Bradford district will host numerous exercises throughout the year to support the learning outcomes of local and national incidents of note.
The district plan 2024-25 shows our confidence in the fire prevention, risk reduction, and collaboration strategies to achieve our goals. The plan hopefully demonstrates to the community of Bradford, our commitment to making Bradford a safer place."
