Purrfect Rescue: Kitten Rescued by Bradford White Watch Firefighters
A five-week-old kitten had a purrfect escape after becoming trapped in the engine of a car in Bradford.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, were called to the scene at 21:39 on 18th September, after the driver heard faint cries coming from the vehicle.
Firefighters from Bradford White Watch, led by Crew Manager Nasar Hussain, responded quickly and successfully freed the kitten after a challenging 45-minute operation. The rescue team had to carefully strip part of the car’s engine to reach the kitten, who had wedged itself deep inside.
“This was a tricky rescue, as the kitten was stuck right in the engine, so we had to work hard to get her out,” said Crew Manager Nasar Hussain. “After around 45 minutes, we managed it, and we’re so happy that this story had a 'pawsitive' ending.”
Following the rescue, the kitten, now named Ota after the Toyota car in which he was trapped, was handed over to Bradford Cat Watch Rescue and Sanctuary (BCWRS). Ota is currently receiving emergency care and is expected to make a full recovery despite likely fractures in his back legs.
BCWRS rehabilitates and re-homes cats and kittens across West Yorkshire and is run entirely by volunteers who work tirelessly saving the lives of over 500 cats and kittens every year.
Katie Lloyd, founder of Bradford Cat Watch Rescue and Sanctuary, expressed her gratitude to the team, saying, “Many thanks to the amazing officers at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service once again for saving another little life.”
Earlier this week, Bradford White Watch received a surprise visit from Ota and Katie, who brought a thank you card and buns along to thank the firefighters for their efforts in rescuing the little kitten.
As colder months approach, WYFRS is reminding the public to check around their vehicles before setting off.
“Animals often seek warmth or shelter around cars,” Crew Manager Hussain added. “Give the bonnet and wheel arches a quick tap and set off slowly to give any hidden animals a chance to escape.”
